Doctors need test results to find out what is wrong with a patient. Medical laboratory technicians produce those results. The Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) at Assam Institute for Paramedical Studies (AIPS) is a 2-year course that trains you for this role.
You can join after Class 12. You will learn in the classroom, on campus labs and in hospital labs. You will also practise 10–20 hours a week, depending on the semester.
DMLT is a diploma course in medical laboratory technology. This is a branch of health science that tests blood, urine and other body samples. Doctors use these tests to find, treat and prevent disease.
Many people call it a “lab technician course” or a “paramedical course”. India’s health ministry now uses the term “allied and healthcare” for these jobs. Medical laboratory work is one of its main groups.
As a technician, you will not treat patients. You will collect samples, run tests, check the results and write reports. Doctors read your reports to decide the treatment.
DMLT at AIPS takes 2 years. Your week includes:
You must attend the hospital postings to get your certificate.
The DMLT program is typically spread across 2 years (4 semesters) and covers six main modules:
Haematology is the study of blood. You learn to check blood samples and understand blood groups. You also learn how blood banks store blood safely.
Biochemistry tests body fluids for chemicals such as sugar. You learn to run lab machines called analysers. You also learn to check that results are correct and to write clear reports.
Microbiology is the study of tiny germs. You learn to keep tools germ-free and to grow samples in the lab to find infections.
These subjects study tissue and cells under a microscope. You also learn to label, store and handle samples safely.
You learn safe habits, such as handling sharp tools and waste. You also learn how quality rules work in accredited labs and why good record-keeping matters. NABL is the national body that accredits labs in India.
You work in real labs for a set time and learn how a working lab runs.
Lab work is a big part of DMLT. At AIPS, you practise 10–20 hours a week in labs and hospital postings, depending on the semester. You use a practical logbook to track what you have learned.
On campus, you practise on lab equipment and phlebotomy stations. Phlebotomy means drawing blood. In your rotations, you train in reputed diagnostic labs and hospitals, gaining hands-on exposure to real patient samples and day-to-day laboratory operations under professional supervision.
The total DMLT fee at AIPS is ₹97,600 for 2 years.
